Lancaster or nottingham

Hi

Still haven't found our boat & can't decide if this weekend we should go to Garstang lancaster or Nottingham!!!

 

We are planning on traveling Friday & staying over that way we could have a good look round a couple of marinas/ brokerage ?

 

So is the question how long is a piece of string or which area will have our boat

What are you looking for? Why not sort out requirements and then ask Matty40S to help find boats which might suit you. Or are you still trying to work out what you might want in which cas e suggest you do a couple of short hires on different boat types.

On a route planner both Lancaster and Nottingham are about a 2 hour drive from Teeside, suprised me I would have thought Lancaster was nearer to you for some reason. So if the choice is where you'd rather have a boat moored then Nottingham every time. Although the Lancaster is very nice it's 40 odd miles end to end and you'll soon get bored of it, the Nottingham area offers so much choice of ways and places to go it gets my vote every time. If all you want is somewhere to go and pootle around for a bit of a break more like a floating caravan then maybe the Lancaster is worth looking at although I think the boats there are a bit on the pricey side, a hang over from before the link opened and getting a boat there without a truck was made possible. If you are thinking of the Lancaster try Bridge House Marina & Moons Bridge Marina both have a number of boats for sale.

Ok now remember I'm a newbie so treat me gentle I bruise easygoing he goes! what I like & what OH (that's Alan) like are mmmmm a little bit mmmmm shall I say different but he's MY ideal boat:)

 

Trad or SemiTrad 55-57ft

Fixed bed not a cross bed ( only happy beds)

Shower cubical ( don't like curtains clinging 2 bot)

Central heating

Stove ( multi burning)

Kitchen (not tiled work top)

Dinett ( converts 2 double )

 

Battery management

Plenty of batteries

Inverter

Cassette toilet

Generator (would be handy)

 

Well I've surprised myself the lists not that long oh & a well blackened sturdy bottom finished in a lovely coat

 

We would be mooring the boat closer to home possible lemonroyd so we can use most weekends until we retire

It's not just lancaster or Nottingham we have been to doncaster & but these 2 location seam to have quite a few narrowboats for sale.

Which gaves us the opinion of checking out a few places & a night in a hotel which is a bonus well for me

If you know of any other areas which aren't too far away please tell

we were exhausted by then.

Isn't Skipton the nearest place to you then? There's a post on here as the festival is on this weekend, only 1 hr 5 mins away on the route planner, not that means much but it seems a lot closer than Nottingham.

Yes you are right it is a lot closer but sadly no narrowboats for sale

Did you see my list for what we wanted for my oopps our boat thing I missed off was budget £35000 / £40000

There's always boats for sale, just walk down the towpath and look at the signs in the windows. There's at least 4 up for sale on the marina I'm on and I can't find any of them on the net, plus something like the Skipton festival will bring a lot of people out, might be worth a look?

Don't worry about what's going on around people will read and answer. it's a bit like being in a crowded pub, but it's more women that men most of the time so you will get heard.

If you start looking at narrowboats on a National basis, through sites such as Appollo Duck - you'll be safe in the knowledge that whatever you find, whichever one you fall in love with - you'll be able to take it to Lemonroyd!

Have you looked around the Braunston area, I would have thought that gives the biggest concentration of brokers in one area. Say Braunston, Wilton, Rugby Boat Sales, Calcutt, ABNB, Crick. That would keep you busy for a weekend.

Thanks might have a li title look at that OH noticed it earlier but do you think it's a bit old like him lol !!

But at present sat in pub at garstang going to look at some boats on the canal tomorrow so finger crossed

As you're going past the end of the road, these may be worth a look.

There are plenty that will disagree with that statement, although, admittedly, the Ribble can be quite restrictive.

Which bit don't you agree with "very nice", "40 odd miles long" probably not so I guess "you'd soon get bored of it" is the issue? If you're in the middle then 20 miles each way no locks so 5 hours to either end, if you like to go places it's not the best. Lots of people love it with good reason, it is a much under rated part of the world loads of really nice places to moor up and watch the world go by, but when you set off there's 2 choices north or south. A 2 week holiday would be book a passage on the Ribble and back and work round that. I looked at it but I feel it didn't work for me, you only have to look at the number of boats on it to see it does work for lots of others, I feel it is too restrictive in size for me to enjoy for long.
