Rustykev Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 Whats the Thames doing now? I've read the EA blurb but need to know the real world please. We want to escape Newbury soon to get up country. My last time on the Thames was 2 years ago when, if you recall, it was moving slower than a snail on a go slow!
MtB Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 Dunno about the Thames, but County Lock was still looking impassable from the IDR road bridge a couple of days ago when I last drove past. And a week ago the Kennet was flowing straight over the top of both sets of gates and flooding the locksides. I can't imagine it slowing much for a few days yet but I'll take note next time I drive past, possibly tomorrow. MtB
DaveC Posted March 30, 2013 Report Posted March 30, 2013 This site is updated daily http://riverconditions.environment-agency.gov.uk/ but I would disregard what it says about upstream of Blakes lock (on the Kennet), best to look at CART site for that info. HTH Dave

HTH Dave Don't rely on the EA's bald statement of Red or Yellow; there are different shades od the colours! They are based on a formula rahter than an absolute measurement of flow. At the moment the state has only just been downgraded to Yellow and there's still a lot of watre coming down, so I' d stay put until the end of NEXT week - perhaps a bit more if your engine is small. A waste of fuel if you can only just punch the flow - and tghat doesn't leave you any spare power to cope with eddies and the like.
