Peter Thornton Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 (edited) We've booked our share boat, Sunseeker, for the month of March in order to do the Thames Ring. Unfortunately we're being scuppered by 2 lots of stoppages. We were going to do it anticlockwise but Abingdon lock and Iffley lock are closed until 22nd March. OK, we'll go clockwise instead, but then we'll run into the Braunston stoppage on the first day - we're moored at Stockton Top Marina. Does anyone know how the Braunston work is going? Any chance of it finishing before the scheduled date of 8th March? Edited February 24, 2013 by Peter Thornton
scrumpylurcher Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 Its too early to say but the last conversation I had inferred that there wouldnt be any extensions and they were getting near ready to refill the top pound. I will try to find out more tomorroww.
Homer 123 Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 I will be coming through these locks on my first trip back home with my live aboard from the boatyard where I bought it. Probably wont be able to start the journey until 23rd March at the earliest but hoping the works will be done by then!
scrumpylurcher Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 Talking to CRT locally this morning all their work is on schedule and the opening will be as per the Waterscape published date. That being the case they will re-open on 9th March. My own thought is that you may get through on Friday late afternoon 8th March, no guarantees though.
Peter Thornton Posted February 25, 2013 Author Report Posted February 25, 2013 Thanks very much for that info. Looks like I'll be hanging around for a week before a quick dash to London! I was kinda hoping that it might open a bit early, would be grateful for any more info if things change.
scrumpylurcher Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 I will keep an eye out but they were pretty adamant that the do not open early. I pass the bottom lock at least twice a day so I will know when the chains are off.
Peter Thornton Posted March 4, 2013 Author Report Posted March 4, 2013 Am now moored at the Stop House and had a wander up this morning. They seem to be almost finished but naturally enough won't commit to opening early. I did find the boss who was a little more hopeful so I'm hoping to be underway before Friday. Our enforced stay made more bearable by lovely weather and a curry night at the local pub! Made the mistake of wandering round the marina and saw far too many boats that I would rather like to buy! - One day.
Peter Thornton Posted March 7, 2013 Author Report Posted March 7, 2013 Had another look up here at lunchtime and got the distinct impression that we might as well have a lie in in the morning! Hoping to be away by tomorrow evening though.
scrumpylurcher Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 I think you will find the restrictions removed tomorrow mid afternoon
Peter Thornton Posted March 8, 2013 Author Report Posted March 8, 2013 Yes, that's what we're hoping, it would be nice to be able to clear the locks today.
scrumpylurcher Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 For anyone still waiting and not aware the padlocks are now removed from Braunston Locks.
Peter Thornton Posted March 8, 2013 Author Report Posted March 8, 2013 Thanks Scrumpy Got through just after 2.30
