As a new NB owner and previous experience has only been on a number of holidays with crew. I would like to set off in 2013 for a few months alone. I am based on the Worcester/ Birmingham at Hanbury. There are three routes I am considering but can not decide what the best one to do as a lone boater. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Route one: Llangollen canal via river Severn and Staff/Worc

Route two Lechlade via Tardebigge and South Oxford

Route Three. Bath via south Oxford.

I am also open to other suggestions. Any advice on the pros and con for a lone newbie would be fully appreciated.

Many Thanks Baz

Slow and steady wins the race. Don't let any knowitalls pressure you into rushing

Three great routes, all with their own problems for a single hander but nothing insurmountable. Ive found over the years just setting off and ending up wherever we ended up was the beauty of boating rather than so called rings/routes etc..............enjoy

Thanks Tim. I expect I will end up seeing where my nose takes me. Baz

The locks on the K&A are hard work if you're single handed. The Thames from Oxford to Reading on the other hand almost makes it worth the effort. The Oxford is also very nice, especially once you master the lift bridges. And don't forget that it will take you probably as long to travel from Devizes to Bath, as it takes from where you are to Devizes...

I might be stating the obvious, but if you're on a river like the Severn you can't just moor up anywhere. So if you need to heed the call of nature then be prepared!

There should be no problem stopping briefly on the lock moorings.

Oh, and the Severn locks are done for you. You'll need to secure your boat to a vertical wire in the lock; a bit more tricky on your own.
