Did anyone hear the big bang about an hour ago?
Rattled the house here in Swindon and apparently it was heard all over Oxfordshire up as far a Coventry. Reall mystery, my cat raised it's hackles and disappeared behind the bed and hasn't been see since.

The Ministry of Defence initially said it was investigating what was behind a loud noise in Oxfordshire but a spokesman later confirmed it was from one of two RAF Typhoons that had been launched following an emergency call from a helicopter.

The helicopter had transmitted on the wrong frequency, he said.

Interestingly the BBC site had it as a sonic boom from a Tornado, and have it as an earthquake according to British Geological Survey. -So it's probably neither [/cynic mode]

Just heard the news,RAF say it was one off there fighters being scrambled. Going where? I thought the sonic boom happened when the plain was coming towards Briton, being scrambled would mean it was going away???

I remember back in '99 when sailing across the channel to view the solar eclipse, we heard Concorde's double sonic boom. Was really strange to be out in the middle of the sea with no land in sight - sounded like someone firing a double barrel shotgun nearby!
