We are going up Caen Hill on Thursday. If anyone wants to come & help/natter/ or just make sure we go, you are welcome and we would love to see you. Sorry for the short notice but that is our usual lack of forward planning.

Sorry Sue can't make it - it was nice of you to send Roger to help us down the flight last Autumn though!

If we were sensible we could come up at the weekend - we may still be - we aren't going to hurry.

2 from the top in the 70s ( or possibly early 80s).

Spot on. 1976.

I think the building on the right is still there, though can't really tell from Google Earth whether it is the same building. An old school?

Maybe Sue could have a look on the way up?

Last time I went down there was with me old mate Martin Bowers, another ancient mariner from the Basingstoke. I steered, he did the work. We went down with a hire boat, an Aussie couple. He wandered off in front 'to set the locks', she steered. Poor old Martin was struggling on his own so I suggested that we breast up and she could help him. "Oh I don't do locks!" was the response. I couldn't do much as I was on crutches at that time.

When we got to the bottom we found that her other half had merely been opening gates as all the locks were full. Poor old Martin was knackered, and he wasn't too happy.... which is not a pretty sight.

The journey back up was much better as a local boater came out especially to help us. We did the 16 in 3hrs 20 mins.

Similar thing happened when I went down. Apart from the dad who was steering an entire family on the boat next to us decided to stop helping and have dinner half way down :D

I quote fancy going back up this year

As usual our plans have changed already. I got a phone call from my daughter, help was needed in Bristol with grandson. So Devizes must wait, hopefully just until the weekend.
