Went for our usual evening walk tonight with the two mutts - Keadby & Stainforth just past Vazons Bridge heading towards Thorne.............last week mum and dad swan were proudly showing off 6 cygnets which had suddenly appeared overnight. They've taken to bringing them out onto the towpath side of the canal of an evening and although there has been a bit of hissing when we've gone past with the dogs (on leads until we're well past) not had any real problems. Until tonight! Dad cob decided he ain't having none of us tonight. Stood in the middle of the towpath hissing and spitting, neck in the air and wings a beating! Spectacular sight but very scary having a cob swan advancing on you in a state of agitation. Needless to say we beat a hasty retreat tonight...........unfortunately I didnt hang around to get a photo of that show!

Try wearing one of those yellow reflective coats (not the vest), and, whilst holding out the sides of your coat, run towards the swan, shouting loudly. You've never seen a swan run of as fast as ....

Why should you want to scare anything with babies? It's their nature to protect their young.

To get past? They don't understand you're not a threat, just like our cats don't understand that cars are not predators.

I'm impressed Tillergirl named her dogs Stainforth and Keadby though ;)
