In 12 Days we will be able to say next year we will be on "The Cut " again. Roll on 2014( My wife just said I will drink to that as she just informed me that she has just finished the bottle of West Cape Howe Sauvignon Semillion Blanc)

Edited to say there is one mouthful left.

Ps That is a very nice dry white from the Mt Barker region of W.A.

From here to the Lancaster, provided I get a booking this year, then a long trip to Bristol. Next London, then the fens. Many miles, many locks. But as Halifax Town are in the last 16 of the trophy, it might change if they get to Wembly.

We're in the Worcester area at the moment. After a detour to Calf Heath for the Easter banter we're planning to go back down the Severn and hire a pilot to take us through the Bristol Channel onto the K&A. Then an exploration of the K&A, London canals and Lea & Stort, finishing on the South Oxford. Probably back to the Birmingham area for winter.

Mind you we said last year we'd spend this year exploring the Northern canals and ended up vising the Shroppie, Llangollen and Montgomery so who knows!

I forsee a game of risk on the K&A.

Well.....

...... Could this be the start of a sarfern Banter? The fox would be good...

Now that sounds like a plan! Are you up for organising it?

Damn, that means we'll have to get properly organised with dates of where we're going to be!

I'd be up for it, end of August start of September is good for me to aim for, I'll get my thinking cap on....

The Fox at Hanwell??? Thats where we plan to moor.......

St Mary's Pier 4

That's the one, great boozer and nice place to tie up, worth coming down to the basin, to check out the wonders of Brentford high street... (many pubs at least)

One of the things we want to do while we're in the South is to get the boat as close as we can to the Great Dorset Steam Fair - which happens to be the week after the August Bank Holiday.

We could be round your way a month before? Or a month after?

I'm flexible but would probably look at the end of Sept as it's well out of festival season. I used to live close to the GDSF Site, I can still smell the smoke and steam, wonderful!

What say you Smiffy? If you can't, I'd be up for two! :)

Sounds like a plan! We'll be ambling back up by then so that'll work in fine.

We've been to the Steam Fair about 15 times and absolutely love it - the constant sound of music, the whistle of steam engines, the smell of steam, the line of engines, beer tents, agricultural displays, tractor pulling, the market, stationery engines etc etc etc - fantastic stuff. And the sheer scale of the site takes your breath away when you first arrive.

Now there's a man who knows how to compromise

This year the Humber barge needs a drydock and insurance survey and the little narrowbeam cruiser needs a new safety cert. I doubt if I will have the time or money this year to do more than a little trip up the Medway and possibly the Stort in the autumn

Were you there this year?

Libby and I were......................and we've got the webbed feet to prove it

Ah it was a wet one this year was it! Memories of many either wet and muddy or hot and dusty steam fairs. One year it was so muddy they had to use tractors to pull caravans into the campsite - we had to wait outside for about three hours because they stopped people coming in while they tried to make some order out of the carnage.

Sorry, in answer to your question no we didn't get there this year :)

Are you going next year?

We've plumped for Liverpool & The Liverpool Link this year, but C&RT appear to have other ideas. We're hiring from Claymoore at Preston Brook and according to canalplan, we could easily be at the bridge at Melling waiting for passage into Liverpool by 9am Monday - however, according to the "Liverpool Link Skipper's Guide 2011" (.. which I downloaded from C&RT website in Nov 2012..) it appears C&RT don't do inward passages on a Monday... Worse, if we did get into Liverpool on the Moday, we'd need to leave Tuesday morning to get back, and you guessed it.. they don't do outward passages on a Tuesday ! Some would say you can't see Liverpool in one evening - That may be true, but if I wanted to stay in Liverpool for longer than one evening, I'd go by train and stay in a hotel, and not go the expense of a Hireboat ! We want to use the boat to do what it was designed for - cruising - not sitting in a marina for 2 or 3 days waiting for C&RT to let us out...

Luckily, we do have a 'plan B' which is to get a bus to Liverpool from Melling, and a 'plan C' which is to ignore Liverpool completely and go to Rufford & Tarleton Instead.. but we'd prefer plan A

Yes, very!!

Those who have seen Dr Busker perform might be familiar with his song 'Dorset Flag', sung to the tune of Sloop John B.

Where the Beach Boys sing "I feel so broke up, I want to go home" Busker's version goes "It's f***ing raining, I want to go home"

High spot of the GDSF this year was hearing perhaps 3000 people, who had been plodging about up to their knees in Dorset mud for the past few days, wedged in the Real Ale Tent yelling this line at the top of their voices

I have to revamp my Travelpower drive system before we set off.

I had to hacksaw it off at Henley this year...and the big pulley is just too heavy...especially when you add the tension of the belts.

Beta agree with this..and now supply an aluminium pulley....which they are sending to me..

April time..I will fine machine it...to get the belts in line...put on a new drive plate as the old one rattles....and then we will set off...(all sounds easy doesn't it..?)

Plan..?

Leave Barton Turns (Burton)..and the down to Kennet and Avon...maybe for a month or more.

We got as far as Newbury this year...but the boat was limping...

It looked nice...so we want to spend more time next season.
