IdealStandard Posted February 4, 2013 Report Posted February 4, 2013 How much water is there above the weir on a spring tide? I realise springs are quite variable but the thought of getting stuck on the weir on a falling tide!!!!!!! I guess you went over on the top of the tide, and its quite a way down to Netham lock, so what was the flow like by the time you turned into Netham? Its a fairly tame turn but then the weir is very close! I really want to visit Bristol soon but not sure I am brave enough to do what you did. Also I assume this method means staying in Bristol for at least a month at £25 per night(or maybe just for a day or two on the same spring.) .........Dave You go over at the head of a spring tide and then moor up alongside an old hopper until the tide recedes a bit. It was still a bit fast and choppy going down, but I was a bit desperate to get off the river as I had engine trouble and had been badly caught out by flooding leading to nearly losing my boat! I still don't think it's a very sensible thing to do unless you have to.
Flocal Posted February 4, 2013 Author Report Posted February 4, 2013 Where did you get the info is it reliable because if so ill set of next week towards hungerford From Geoff the patrol guy... altho he knows about as much about whats going on, on the canal and stoppages as weather men know about weather ! Pound was full again yesterday, for reasons unknown as they havent even started the work yet. I really hope it wasnt refilled to benefit the canoe race that went on yeterday
dmr Posted February 4, 2013 Report Posted February 4, 2013 Bath locks will close soon until the end of march so hanham may well be open again by then. ps spring tides are every two weeks But are extra high once per month!? (and we are a deep boat). Hopefully Bristol at Easter. PM me your boat name and will try to say hello as we go past. ..........Dave
IdealStandard Posted February 5, 2013 Report Posted February 5, 2013 Talking of Trevor, can someone message me his mobile number? i managed to wipe all my contacts and can't find it online. I could do with chatting to him.

The waters are now receding slowly but i'd not expect much traffic on the Kennet before the end of February anyway, it's not CRT's fault, these things happen in winter on a mixed river canal navigation. I think the Thames will be in a state for even longer, might just be fit for canal type craft by mid to end march perhaps. I do hope it all works out for you in the end

I do hope it all works out for you in the end I don't blame Crt the work has to be done but it is driving me mad , had another meeting with the boss today and got a stay of execution but still another month of 120miles to work and back which is taking its toll on me and my bike, oh well . I went to look at the Thames yesterday and agree i would not be taking that on just yet but every mile i get closer is a help , Newbury would be fantastic the way things are at the moment .
IdealStandard Posted February 8, 2013 Report Posted February 8, 2013 Lock 19 Friday 8 February 2013 - Sunday 17 February 2013 Lock 19 Seend is closed to craft until further notice. A large hole has appeared in the masonry above the lock, meaning we are unable to sustain a navigable depth of water. A fish rescue will take place, followed by emergency repairs. It is anticipated the lock will be closed for approximately 1 week. Craft travelling West should turn above lock 21. Craft travelling East should turn below lock 17. blackrose Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 (edited) I'm going to need to get going from Wraysbury on the Thames by the end of March towards Bristol and then up to the Avon. From that pdf it looks like Bath locks are out of action intil 15th March so I should be ok. http://canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/library/1711.pdf Are there any other stoppages that will stop me getting from Old Windsor lock on the Thames to Evesham on the Avon (via the Bristol Channel)? Do you mean up the Severn and then onto the Gloucester Avon? Hanham lock (lock No.1 on the K&A) is impassable and may not be cleared until easter.
JDR Posted February 14, 2013 Report Posted February 14, 2013 (edited) Went from Kintbury to Guyers on Wednesday.Apart from the flow directly below Copse Lock where the river rejoins the whole section is fine.Unfortunately E of Newbury town lock is still very fast. The 14day moorings at W. Mills before the swingbridge are out of action due to flood alleviation work (raising towpath height). There's space on the visitor moorings but personally I'd give it another couple of weeks (at least) before trying to venture through or E of Newbury. ETA.... IdealStandard Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 Spoke to Trevor today. He said the if all gors to plan, Hanham lock should be open in around a month. Hopefully before April.
Trix Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 Finally left bedwyn today and got through to hungerford , but they locked picketsfield lock after we went through because something has jammed the paddle open , they said they may have to get a diver to go in . It's taken me exactly three months to go from devizes to hungerford but at least we are now moving . Dreweats lock and widemead are only open on Wednesdays at the moment , does anyone know what conditions are like beyond those?
GSer Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 County lock in Reading is now passable with care as from yesterday i think.
Arducius Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 County lock in Reading is now passable with care as from yesterday i think. Unfortunately no longer! I walked past yesterday and it's the worst it has been all winter. The only indication that there was a lock there at all was the tops of the gates poking out of the water. The weir was almost flat.

The only indication that there was a lock there at all was the tops of the gates poking out of the water. The weir was almost flat. And from CRT earlier this week Kintbury to Reading Monday 18 March 2013 until further notice Due to high flows on the River Kennet, it is recommended craft refrain from navigating this section until the levels have subsided. The only indication that there was a lock there at all was the tops of the gates poking out of the water. The weir was almost flat. Tell me about it Its a real mess this end now, the river is now dropping again but more rain is forcast later in the week, if that's a significant fall, i doubt anybody is going through reading or along the Thames this easter Last time i remember it being this wet this time of year, we didn't get on the Thames till june! Edited March 19, 2013 by GSer
dmr Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 The day before yesterday, after the overnight rain, the towpath past the visitor moorings at Bedwyn was almost "unnavigable". This just highlights the current problem: the ground is now just so waterlogged it can't absorb any more water so any rain just sits on top or runs straight off into the waterway. Would like to be on the Thames in May but GSer might well be right about June!!!! ..........Dave
IdealStandard Posted March 27, 2013 Report Posted March 27, 2013 (edited) Apparently Hanham could be another two weeks! Edited March 27, 2013 by IdealStandard
