Roxy Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 Just saw on the news this evening a young heron has been spotted near Nottingham (Attenborough nature reserve)These are known to emigrate during the winter months in the UK but seems this young bird has took a wrong turn/or been blown off course. But is quite happy being pictured/filmed feeding on fish. If you do happen to be passing and see it pics would be nice as I think they are beautiful and very sociable birds. Just hope it survives if we have such a harsh winter like last year.

I'm confused by this! We see herons regularly throughout the year. According to the RSPB "our grey herons do not migrate". RSPB Linky - Grey Heron. Are you sure you mean heron ? I can't see anything unusual about this, based on what you have said. (Other than it has become a news item!).

Perhaps they generally migrate from Nottingham to the bottom end of the GU?
AlanM6 Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 (edited) Still plenty of Herons on the T&M in the Stone area Edited November 1, 2011 by AlanM6
AlanM6 Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 Ah! Squacco heron thats a different kettle of fish
alan_fincher Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 My link Fair enough..... But you just said "Heron", not "Squacco Heron". At least that explains it.
nipper Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 (edited) I recone I have passed a Heron for every mile i've done today down the Trent and Mersey, and will exect to see more tomorrow too! Do's the OP mean little Egrets? We have lots in the Isle of Wight and indeed all over the south, but not seen any on the cut at all! Nipper Oh! crossposted! Edited November 1, 2011 by nipper
Guest Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 We saw multiple Herons when we were out last week. I think though Roxy's post relates to a particular type..
Roxy Posted November 1, 2011 Author Report Posted November 1, 2011 Ah! Squacco heron thats a different kettle of fish Yep, sorry I didnt post otherwise, my mis-understanding.
AlanM6 Posted November 1, 2011 Report Posted November 1, 2011 We often see a cormorant between Stone & great haywood, I thought this was unusual but apperently not
Naughty Cal Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 We often see a cormorant between Stone & great haywood, I thought this was unusual but apperently not No plenty of Cormorant on the Trent, they seem to sit on every navigation post and weir boom along the river. Plenty of herons as well Not so common a sight are little egret but if you keep your eyes peeled there are a pair on the Trent towards Cromwell and a small flock on the nature reserve at Fiskerton Fen.
Athy Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 The film clip also features bearded tits. They're the ones holding the binoculars and telescopes.

Athy Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 Norty step for you my lad.... As the commentator does not enunciate his aitches clearly, his initial statement "It's had people from all over the country..." sounds like "It's sad people from all over the country..."
BlueStringPudding Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 Squillions of herons round Tring way all year. One year there was even a pelican. But he'd escaped from a private collection somewhere apparently

I'm confused as well, we had shed loads all year round when I was on The Broads and now in the Fens we still see them all year round. Phil

GSer Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 At an art gallery opening, i was wandering through the exhibits when i found a couple of photos of herons, the photographer was standing there, so i asked him why? They were not even that special, just snaps really. He said he was very proud of them because the heron was a very tricky bird to capture on film I hadn't the heart to tell him that they were a very common site if you travel the canals and rivers, i even had one (terry) that would cadge a lift on the roof of the boat when it was feeling lazy.
Athy Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 I had one eat all my Koi I expect you've been carping on about it ever since.
Grace and Favour Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 I had one eat all my Koi What a load of carp
