Hope by arguably better you mean the stuff I used lol.

 

Have 11 beams done now, need 3 more and fingers crossed the extra wood needed will arrive tomorrow.

 

Boat going into dock on Saturday and job number one is removing the old awful roof.

 

To be replaced with a lower sided roof with a better camber on top of roof and a 6 degree side tilt to get better drainage and hopefully reclaim a bit of the gunwhale width too.

Well lots to report

 

The sides are off and roof ready to be removed. The sides turned out to be made of 3mm or 4mm ply after the cladding ( which now appears to be mild steel not Aluminium) had been removed.

 

Softwood framing, (yes seriously!! )

And frames not screwed or fixed to the boat by any means save 4 1inch mild steel screws.

 

Roof consisted of tongue and groove butt joined together with small sections of hardboard ( yes you did read that right).

 

All rotten and soon to be completely removed and consigned to the tip where it rightly belongs !!

 

More updates and pics to follow in a few days when I have time to post them.

It's not done badly, 33 years.

 

But you're right, hardwood framing is the best, 4 times as expensive and it'll outlive you by a few decades (and the engine, and the hull)

quick update on progress.

 

after the recent rain all is dry inside, and thats a first since i have had the boat.

 

now getting on with cleaning and vactan treating the bilges inside ready for painting.

well finally some progress.

 

after delays caused by going back to work and the sub zero temperatures.

 

 

 

had a issue to solve as unable to display license due to the portholes not being in yet.

 

so i ordered a brass licence holder off the internet.

a bit disappointed that no glass included so a bit of perspex and silicone sealed it from the elements and license now on display.

 

 

looking better all legal

 

have continued to paint the bottom of the bilges in the cabin.

 

soon hope to be laying the new floor which is taking up space i nthe boat at present.

another progress update

 

finally managed to get 12ft of bilge cleaned, vactanned and painted in bilge paint.

 

then yesterday got the first section of floor down.

 

have laid the floor to give a access strip in the middle with an inspection hatch underneath where the steps will be to easily remove and check water in bilge/sponge it up.

Finally got rid of the last of the old rotten floor from the other side of the cabin and progressing much faster with the process of removing flaky rust and putting vactanning on then bilge paint over the top.

 

Overkill some might say but I don't want to be storing up problems for the future when I can deal with them now

 

Hope to have the boat ready for rest of new floor by the weekend

no idea truthfully as if i kept count of the hours i would go insane i think.

 

some months only a few hours on saturdays as i work 6 day weeks awy from home then one week off a month.

Ok folks time for another update

 

Having a few days off over easter has enabled me to complete the giant jigsaw that now consists the floor.

 

It was harder than it could have been as i wanted to use all the high quality ply i had left over from the roof.

 

On the plus side the boat is now much more empty as i have used the spare board offcuts on the floor not in the boat.

Now to move onto the hatch and getting the area under gunwhales properly insulated.

thanks i hope to be going in for blacking and my new stren gear in a month or so then i will be out cruising i hope.

well after 2 weeks away from the boat i am back to it.

 

so today the rain held off long enough to get the vents cut in both doors.

 

marked up and cut 4 10mm holes in corners

 

 

then cut with jigsaw

 

 

then fit covers with a bead of silicone behind outside ones.

also managed to disconnect the bilge pump and battery so i could bring home to test.

 

battery down to 12.0 volt and now on charge and bilge pump working and ready to refit in the morning

well after a night on charge the battery was A ok.

 

decided to pump the water from the bilges into a container 10 gallon that i had and dispose of at the local tip as accident with gearbox oil meant it seemed much to oily to pump overboard into the cut.

 

took 3 trips but got there in the end

 

will hopefully be moving onto bigger jobs this week

started by drilling a few holes

 

 

then cutting out the hatch way

 

 

and finding a way to work in todays awful rain

 

 

hoping to get more done tomorrow weather permitting

well things have progressed slowly but successfully this week.

 

got the combing on the hatch made and fitted first

 

 

then made up the brackets for the end of the runners

 

 

then the runners themselves

 

 

and the hatch lid

 

 

 

then position the runners and blocks and screw in to place with brass strips attached

 

 

then after fitting a set of outer guide pieces (2" square iroko) and a set of 2 stops to panel one front one rear to go to top of doors and one to stop the hatch sliding off if pulled.

 

final fit

 

 

and a facia strip to tidy up the back

 

 

 

and job done.

 

now to decide what to do next?

an update on what i have been upto the last few days.

 

had a few left over bits of iroko so i decided to build a cratch cover.

 

started off making the front triangle consisting of 4 pieces. ( yes i know thats a odd triangle but i needed a 6inch top for the board to fix too.)

 

 

then pieced together

 

 

then planed and routed the top plank.

 

 

and blocks between the board and roof

 

 

frame glued and finished

 

 

routed with a rebate for window to sit in.

 

 

coat one of stain/varnish

frame fitted to front of boat.

 

front frame clamped to lip on front of well.

 

holes drilled and countersunk.

 

top plank clamped on and marked on roof to be central.

 

feet in place marked up.

 

holes drilled into roof and countersunk underneath.

feet replaced and pilot holes drilled from underneath.

silicone sealed and screwed in.

 

top plank fitted to feet and front frame.
