I tried to get back to the boat this evening but the canal was in flood with the towpath completely submerged to the extent that, in the dark with no indication of where it might have been safe to wade through, I had to abandon the attempt.

I will try again later.

I just hope that some thoughtful soul loosened the ropes to allow the boat to rise with the changing water level.

I don't understand how this can happen. Why does the water not just pour over the gates of the next lock downhill and into the next pound?

Because there's an 11 miles top pound which then has to work down 2 1/2 miles and 7 locks to get to Cropredy. The canal is the only major water course in the area and there's a lot of water flows into it. Being shallow doesn't help either!

We have been up and down six inches (15 cms) in the last 24 hours, on the North Oxford.

I think Mr Brown might try and argue that in court as sufficient movement for "bona fide for navigation".......

(I'll get my coat....)
