Ace 01 Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Hi We will be having a NB built next year(58ft) as we intend to CC for a number of years. I've read some articles concerning the proposed tax changes on diesel ie 100% irrespective of whether it is used for heating or propulsion. This seems like an expensive way to heat the boat and I was wondering if anyone has experience of using two separate tanks, one for engine use(at 100%) and one for heating etc (at 5%). Also the optimum sizes for both tanks, taking into account the trade off between loss of space and regularity of filling them. I don't want them to be too big and lose space on the boat but neither do I want to refuel every week, especially in the winter. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers David
bottle Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Hi David I have two tanks. The propulsion is the 'normal size that my shell builder installs about 160 litres The generator/heating is about 60 litres The boat is all electric. The engine and the generator (7Kw) both use about 1.25 to 1.5 litres an hour. As for heating although we have an Erbaspacher is has only run for about 10 hours in the last two years, we have a multi-fuel Morso Squirrel. As for how long they last will depend on the usage of the equipment.
Midnight Rider Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 I suppose that it depends how you intend to heat & cook on the boat. If you're going down the solid fuel & gas route, then I wouldn't think that it would be worth two tanks. We are all diesel & had two tanks about the same size as Bottle, one just being for the cooking & lockgate stove. The small tank lasts forever during the summer months but in the depths of winter with the Lockgate on most of the time you may be looking at re-filling every 2/3 weeks.
GUMPY Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 As its pre build two tanks no question about it. The bigger the better cost will be minimal at this stage. At present I run one 700L on 0% tax for heating / generator and one 500L on 60/40 for propulsion / alternator That one will be changed to white as and when that happens
Ace 01 Posted October 5, 2011 Author Report Posted October 5, 2011 Hi All Thanks for your valuable replies, I am definitely going down the 2 tanks route. I can see the government trying to abolish the self assessment for diesel in the future but NOT for heating oil. All I need now is to see a few builders and plan our perfect boat. Cheers David

Cheers David I have two tanks, the heating tank is 180l the propulsion 270l. They're fitted under the floor across the beam of the boat under the floor of the back cabin and built in a U-shape with the prop running down the centre channel. I therefore don't get a list to one side or the other as they empty. RLWP considers them very fine indeed.
