Have acquired a 2 stroke 2 hp Yamaha outboard for the kid's Avon. Problem is it isn't pumping coolant and I think the impeller is shot. Can anyone advise me how to get at it-do I need to remove lower unit? I am more at home with Seagulls.

Any info would be welcome.

Thanks

Well, it depends on the engine.

Is it one of these?

Although it's not the same model (ours was a 15hp 4 stroke) we had very similar problems. We solved it (and this may work for you) by -

1) Lifting the outboard out of the water (swivel it on the mount) and vigorously clean the water intake (with a broom)

2) Lift the top cover off the engine and inspect the pipe that leads to the tell-tale for obvious signs of damage/blockage (there weren't)

3) Jam a cocktail stick as far up the tell-tale outlet as it'll go and wiggle it around

Hope this helps.......

We have one of these engines.

- The casing will come off relativly easyly, but its not a job to do on the water. There is no cooling water pipe as it is all integral to the castings and the shaft.

- I've never had a problem with the cooling water, but the the first thing i would do is to have a look at the inlet holes (the three litte holes eather side, just below the splash plate) Then get hose rig it up to force water into these holes, and see if you can get it to come out of the exhast.

- If not, i beleve the impeller is at the bottom of the shaft.

EDIT

Just been doing a bit of digging around, and a beleave this is a guide to referbishing the water pump.
